With FY13 revenues of over Rs10bn, NSL is the largest private sector seed company in India. NSL's promoter is Mr.Prabhakar Rao, who has run the company since 1983 when he graduated as gold medalist from Banaras Hindu University.

NSL has the largest market share in India in Bt Cotton, where it is one of the 6 companies licensed by Monsanto. Bt Cotton comprises close to 60% of revenues for NSL. NSL's leadership in cotton is under threat from Kaveri Seeds, which has been gaining share in recent years. 

Global PE fund Blackstone had invested Rs 2.5 bn in NSL for a minimum stake of 22.86% at conversion.
